History
The Frontiersmen program is a camp spirit program co-created by
Scott Hanson while working at a scout camp in Utah. In 1980, Scott was hired as the
High Adventure Area Director at Chief Logan Reservation and implemented the Frontiersman program. Some aspects of the program include challenging older scouts (and leaders) to develop stronger outdoor skills while strengthening their leadership abilities.
There is no rank in the Frontiersman program but three levels that demonstrate an individual's abilities.
Once a scout or leader demonstrates the basic skills, he or she becomes a "pioneer" and is presented with a "bear claw" necklace. The necklace is a leather thong worn around the neck with a (plastic) bear claw (wrapped with rabbit fur). Four colored, wooden beads (two on each side of the claw) are included on the necklace to indicate, by their color, during which years the Frontiersman entered the program.
When a Pioneer demonstrates additional skills and leadership in the program, he or she becomes a "trapper". Trappers are presented with necklaces with two bear claws. A Trapper who is committed to the program may be invited by the Mountain Man Council to demonstrate further skills and be recognized as a "mountain man". The Mountain Man (terminology applies to both male and female) is identified by three bear claws.
