New Programs Introduced
A Slide Show recapping the week of camp was added to the closing of the Friday Night Campfire.
Bill McKell first learned of the Friday night slide show concept at National Camp School for Program Directors in 1983. Such a show had been conducted during the summer of 1982 at Woodland Trails Scout Reservation serving the Miami Valley Council headquartered in Dayton, OH. The council had decided not to repeat the show in 1983 because it was considered too expensive and cumbersome. For that reason, CLR decided to wait a year before conducting the project under Assistant Program Director,
Chris Vaughan's, leadership in 1984. Bill and Chris took pictures as they toured camp during the early part of the week. Chris Vaughan's parents picked up the film on Wednesday night, had the slides developed on Thursday and returned the slides Thursday evening. Chris and
Jeff Wyckoff then put the show together Thursday night and during the day on Friday.
Bruce Knox helped with pre-camp music and production. Hence, the tongue-in-cheek "McVon Knockoff Productions" became the first slide show production company. A screen was borrowed from the lunch room of Tiffin Elementary School in Chillicothe and two slide projectors and a fader were purchased during the off season. The original plan called for Polaroid "instant slides" to be taken on Thursday and Friday and then added to the show late Friday. The reduced quality of the Polaroid slides when compared to the Kodachrome slides made that plan impractical and it was quickly dropped. The Polaroid slides worked very well when not used in conjunction with Kodachrome slides. The CLR slide show team produced Polaroid slide shows at Order of the Arrow conclaves and various camporees and other weekend events throughout the remainder of the 80s.
